Having Enough Hands

I think one of the hardest things about having lots of kids is not always having enough hands to go around.  Idgie is sick today, and very very needy.  However, she is also a typical three year old still and refuses to be helped in any way.  It's a difficult line to walk between trying to do what is best to help her feel better, and also to keep her happy.
Right as I was making dinner, Idgie decided that she needed to be cuddled RIGHT THEN.  I was more than happy to do so, but I also had three other kids that were starving and needed to eat.  I was more than happy to cuddle with her, but I needed just 10 more minutes to finish up dinner.  Idgie literally sat at my feet and screamed, begging and wailing for me to cuddle with her.  Finally, Emmaline took my place and Idgie was content:

Sometimes I guess having enough hands to go around means relying on your seven year old!

Toothless

Last night my tooth was bleeding a lot. It was also very very loose. We were in the bathroom, carefully wiping some of the blood off, and then mom yanked it out. The toothfairy came last night and brought me a quarter. On the back of the quarter it had a little picture of Colorado.

I told mommy that I wanted some juice with a straw for lunch so I could put the straw through the hole. I also told her that I wanted to take a picture in the morning and write a blog about it.

Mom keeps trying to call me Toothless but I told her I'm not a dragon!

Here I am!

Remembering 10 years

This post is really more for the kids to read when they're older, so please bear with me.

10 years ago today, Bethany and I were beginning an otherwise normal day. We tended to wake up around 6:30 or 7:00am and leisurely get ready for the day. We had an alarm clock that played a local radio station when the alarm would go off, and we'd leave it on for the duration of a normal morning to listen to the morning DJs. As we went about our normal routine, the DJs weren't joking and playing music as normal, they were talking about burning buildings and strange things going on. Bethany and I were both confused, so we turned the TV on.

CNN, at the time, was the news source of record, and that's where we turned the channel. Images of fire and smoke billowing from one of the towers of the World Trade Center were on all of the news stations, though. Not knowing at the time how NYC flight patterns worked, or the specific geography, I thought to myself how it might have been possible for a plane to accidentally crash into such tall buildings. (Two years prior I had been at the top of those buildings with a friend, and I remember being amazed at how tall the buildings were.)

We watched the TV for a little bit, with the anchors not really sure what was going on, or how/why it had all happened. As we watched, I remember one of the shots they showed us had a glimpse of the second plane, and then the screen was showing the ensuing fireball of the second aircraft colliding with the second building. Bethany and I were both flabbergasted. It was obvious at that point that the entire sequence of events was intentional, and the intention was to terrorize America.

Our TV was in our bedroom and we were both sitting on the bed when the first tower fell. What we saw on TV didn't make sense. It appeared as though the building was falling, with smoke and debris flying everything. I remarked that it couldn't be falling, that it must have been another explosion. Bethany thought the tower had fallen. As the various camera shots were moved around it became obvious that Bethany was right. A short time later, we both sat stunned as the second tower collapsed. At the time, it was assumed that the towers had been nearly full. The assumed loss of life was being calculated in the 10s of thousands. I worked at and attended BYU. It was a Tuesday and my classes were later that afternoon. I arrived at work late, and I remember the announcement that there would be a prayer meeting in the Marriott Center, and then all students and staff were released for the day.

As the following years and months unfolded, details, heroes and villains all emerged. Stories will continue to be told of those events, and hearts will continue to be touched. I didn't know anyone who was directly affected by the events of 9/11/2001. I have been touched by the collective feeling of compassion for those who were affected. And on this night, 9/11/2011, ten years later as I sit in a hotel room blocks from where the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center once stood, I'm reminded again of the collective feeling of compassion. On my way home from dinner this evening, this is what I saw:

On the anniversary of 9/11, massive flood lights are illuminated in the place where the Twin Towers once stood. It's called the Tribute of Light. What an opportunity to see that on the 10th anniversary. Here's a better picture than my dinky little camera can take:

From my hotel room I'm able to look north and see what is currently the tallest building in New York, the Empire State Building. It is illuminated in a Red/White/Blue color scheme to commemorate the 10th anniversary as well.

Happy 7th Birthday Emmaline!

Emmaline celebrated her 7th birthday today!  We of course went mini-golfing on Saturday, and then on Monday we let her open her presents a day early because her birthday fell on a school day and we didn't want to have to make her wait to open gifts until she got home!

A few weeks ago, I had some really great coupons to JCPenney and Kohls that were about to expire, so we decided that one of her birthday gifts would be clothes shopping with mom!  She is in need of some things for winter.  It was fun to see her tastes (still into anything pretty and sparkly!) and also teach her and guide about good shopping habits.  I actually took all the clothes away and didn't let her have them until she opened them on her birthday.

I have always really disliked the skinny jean style, but it turns out that Emmaline rocks the look!  In fact being the stick that she is, the skinny jeans are actually a bit big on her still!  The jeans she picked have some rhinestone decoration on the back pocket, and she kept dancing in front of the dressing room mirror looking at her butt.  How young they learn!

Here she is modeling them - complete with a little bit of "pre-tween" attitude

I also included a couple of shirts that she didn't know about.  The surprise Hello Kitty shirt was definitely a hit!

Unfortunately her birthday fell on a school day, but AJ surprised her by showing up at her school for lunch with Taco Bell in hand.  She was so excited to see him and thrilled to do lunch together in the cafeteria!

After school was birthday dinner.  Instead of cake this year she picked Banana Splits.  We were so naughty that we had those first, and then ate dinner afterwards!

After we tucked the other kids in bed, we told Emmaline we had one more surprise for her.  AJ would play Scrabble Jr. with her, while I cleaned her room.  I think that may have been the most appreciated gift of all.  She was so thrilled to hear that I was going to clean up her mess instead of her.  She gave me a huge hug and kiss.

Happy Birthday Baby Girl!

Mini Golf

Emmaline decided that she wanted to go mini-golfing for her birthday this year so today we headed out to do that.  We didn't even bother to keep score - they just had a blast hitting the balls around.

Emmaline showing her concentration:

Liliana had a blast - but she needed a little help from time to time - as did all the kids.

Idgie needed some one-on-one tutoring, and usually hit the ball once, and then would pick up the ball and drop it in the hole.

Lincoln was lucky to just enjoy the fun from his stroller.  Though he and AJ did get to go off-roading a few times!

And last but not least - AJ caught me doing a happy dance when I helped Idgie get a hole-in-one.

The Golden Rule

Emmaline was telling us about learning about The Golden Rule in school.  She said the Golden Rule was "Treat others the same way you want to be treated."
"What does that mean?" I asked.
"It means that you should treat people nicely so they treat you nicely.  But if they treat you mean, then you treat them mean because they have it coming to them!"

Out of the mouths of babes.
